Wychwood accepts replant plan
Julie Murray
On July 13, Wychwood residents accepted the city’s plan for a bike path and replanting at the end of Juniper Street, according to Gilles Sabourin, director of the city’s Aylmer service centre. The plan will see one 100-millimetre oak planted, to replace the one tree that was cut down. “The reset of the vegetation was shrubs and sumac,” notes Mr Sabourin, who says that other trees will also be planted within the context of the city’s tree-planting program. The plan will also see a lamppost placed next to a curved path, located near a future park named in honour of former councillor Louis Roy. The developer Bouladier is responsible for constructing the path, and it should be done within approximately one year.
Earlier than expected
After the tree was cut down and the city reached an accord with the residents, “we were told that the plan would not be available until the end of the summer,” says Cathy Stewart of the residents’ association, Friends of Wychwood. “Suddenly then it was rushed through, just a week later, and there was a hurry for us to approve it.” Ms Stewart adds, “The plan wasn’t an official plan by an engineer. It was more a hand-drawn concept drawing. We were also told that the approval was only for the light, and we plan to hold the city accountable on that.
Councillor Frank Thérien commented, “Let the people see the plans and choose the final one. We need to give the people what they want, especially after the battles they fought.” Mr Thérien credits Mayor Bureau for the quick action, although he adds the mayor has promised to investigate the sequence of events leading to the violation of council’s original agreement with the residents.
