1,000-car traffic

Victor Beaudry - Aylmer Road stop lights

Julie Murray

During City Council’s August 22 Executive meeting, the city approved a $53,000 contract to install traffic lights at the corner of Victor-Beaudry and Aylmer Road. “We’re moving this through,” says Councillor Alain Riel. “We just received a petition signed by hundreds of people, and we were able to scientifically justify the need for a light this July. There are about twenty variables that engineers study to determine if lights are warranted. And now the contract was awarded this morning. In municipal politics, this is a very rapid process.”

“We want to put all the underground hardware in before it freezes,” reports Mr Riel. “If that’s in place, the lights can be installed when we receive them, even in winter.” He points out that in the past five years, there have been seventeen accidents at the intersection, which is next to a 600-home development. “With 1.6 cars per house, that means there are 1,000 cars using the intersection. It’s dangerous and people need to be careful.”

Mr Riel adds that many people had asked for lights at the southern end of Victor-Beaudry because they were having trouble crossing Lucerne at rush hour to get to the bus stop or bike path. “People were waiting for lights for seven years. I got them in eighteen months. It was a huge victory.”
