Aylmer’s pool: closed more often than not

Julie Murray

One year after its opening, Aylmer’s $5.9 million pool is closed more often than not due to a lack of lifeguards. While there are still early morning swims on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there are no longer midday swims on weekdays. The number of hours the pool is open to the public for combined, recreational, adult, or lap swims ranges from two and a half hours on Tuesdays to seven and a half hours on Fridays. There are no family swims (adults accompanying children aged thirteen or less) or parent/baby swims (adults with children aged seven or less).

Councillor Jocelyne Houle reports a similar problem in the Buckingham pool, which opened a few months before Aylmer’s. “Our situation is not as bad as in Aylmer,” she says. “In Buckingham, it’s just two blocks of time during the week, at lunchtime, when the pool is closed,” as the Tuesday and Thursday noontime recreational swim was cancelled.

Low pay, school demands

Councillor Alain Pilon, chair of council’s Sports and Recreation Committee, notes that lifeguard jobs are often filled by young people who have quit to return to school. “Other pools in Gatineau are facing the same situation. Recruiting lifeguards is very difficult” because of the low salary. Lifeguards make $9.74 per hour while assistant lifeguards make $8.71 per hour; the minimum salary in Quebec is $8 per hour. Notes Mr. Pilon, “there are better-paying jobs available to the youth.”

The low pay is accompanied by the high cost of training. To become qualified to be a Gatineau lifeguard, a person must spend nearly $500 and many hours of training. Ms Houle suggests forming partnerships to lessen the financial burden of lifeguard training.

Mr Pilon thinks the city should study increasing lifeguard salaries, and be more flexible with work schedules. “It’s not the employer who sets a work schedule for young people, it’s the other way around,” he says, adding that “lifeguarding could be a job for a recently-retired person. It could be very rewarding to watch over a beautiful pool like Aylmer’s.”

Less than 100 in water: two guards only

The city has re-opened the popular morning swim, from 6 – 8 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The time periods could be opened because of the rules regarding the ratio of lifeguards to swimmers; when there are 100 swimmers or fewer, only two lifeguards, not three, are required.
