Nouveaux quais pour la marina
Julie Murray

Charity roadblocks or not? City & clubs still talking
Julie Murray & Fred Ryan
During an April 21 meeting between members of Aylmer’s Interclubs and Gilles
Sabourin, the director of the Aylmer service centre, a consensus was reached
that the Champlain Bridge intersection is too dangerous to continue holding
roadblocks at that location, with eight out of ten participants supporting that
position. Five of the ten were club presidents. “The clubs submitted
recommendations that are worth looking into” regarding how to improve safety at
other locations, Mr Sabourin told The Bulletin.
Concerned that they might lose the most lucrative corners to fund-raise, the
presidents pressed the city to permit use of the Vanier and McConnell Street
intersection. Even though the corner meets four of the city’s five criteria,
they argued the speed limit should not be a detriment since all cars have to
slow and stop at the four-way stop at this intersection. One of the InterClub
officials said they want a city-wide exemption for four-way stops, not merely
this Aylmer intersection.
Interclub’s Jacques Laflamme remarked that the roadblocks have a lot of history
and are very important to funding the clubs’ activities, especially the media
roadblock. He said he cannot recall an accident caused by any roadblock, and
said most are held on weekends when there is less commuter traffic.
City administrators are examining the recommendations and will provide council
with a final proposal before the next council meeting,May 22.
