This week, have been exposed to a better understanding of how hard it is to manage aggressive behaviour in elementary schools. I know from talking with other parents that it happens too often. I am writing because there is shame attached to it from both sides – with kids pushed down in the schoolyard at [...]

Petition against Hydro-Québec’s wireless meters
People opposed to wireless electric meters planned by Hydro-Quebec spoke up. The Coalition québécoise de lutte contre la pollution électromagnétique (CQLPE) managed to obtain 13,082 signatures on the National Assembly petition for a moratorium on Hydro-Québec’s plan to install 3.8 million wireless electric meters across the province by 2017. Of the 13,082 signatures, 9,904 were [...]
Follow the stream that holds our hand : Replacing wild lands with playgrounds does not benefit children
A new playground for children, per se, is always good news. I am one of those people who thinks we never do enough for the young ones. As attractive as they may be, these parks, even the “mega” ones, cannot replace the pleasure children can experience when exploring, with friends and family, the natural and [...]
What’s a councillor for?
Some call it “The Anger Stream”. It is a stream that meanders the future site of Domaine des Frênes, at the corner of Vanier and Aylmer Road. It is also a stream that will be filled in by the developer if nothing is done, since he has already received Gatineau’s go-ahead and the approval of [...]
Aylmer’s municipal court moving
I read with interest the article concerning our municipal court being moved to Hull in 2013. Such a move is not without precedent. If the municipal court should move next year it will be the 125th anniversary of when our criminal court also was transferred to Hull. Aylmer had been the courthouse town in this [...]
Gatineau has a vision for sports and recreation facilities?
The city is developing a master plan for sports and recreational facilities operated by the city now and in the future. A vision in 2012 — maybe someone should have had a vision ten years ago. Aylmer has been fueling the growth of the city since the forced amalgamation. With little room left in the [...]
Vote Aylmer for Hockeyville!
Frank Robinson Arena has qualified for the Kraft Hockeyville competition this year. The winner will get a $100,000 upgrade for the arena and will host an NHL pre-season game. We are trying to get as many people to register from our community on the Hockeyville website so that we may qualify as one of the final 15. With the [...]
Pet license rates not justified
In response to N. Romanin’s letter on pet licenses, permits used to cost $10 for neutered pets and $20 for non-spayed. We used to have our own SPCA in Aylmer, then the city “centralized” the service, resulting in Aylmer’s shelter becoming a privately owned no-kill shelter. The Gatineau SPCA raised the $10 license fee to $30, [...]
(Français) Traffic circle at McConnell-Vanier
Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Visit www.iihs.org for FAQs and safety facts. If you want to see the difference between a traffic circle, a rotary (UK roundabout) and a modern roundabout, search www.k-state.edu to see pictures. www.fhwa.dot.gov has a video about modern roundabouts that is mostly accurate (http://tinyurl.com/3hjrqus ). Not a National Park for US, but a resource base for China
Prime Minister Harper’s analogy is of Canada not being a “giant national park for the U.S.” and that the “pipeline debate should be left to Canadians”. More valid is this: Canada is a giant resource base. Harper wants American environmentalists excluded from the pipeline debate. For consistency so too ought all foreign-owned companies (and their [...]
