Impressions of the campaign: real listening?
Now that we have voted for a new government, what are we about to get, exactly? We sent the old governing Liberals a message that they have been taking our region for granted because we always voted for them, like trained circus dogs – but where does this get us? Will Mr Coulliard now pay for the by-election he has cost us, since he is taking his marbles and going home? This has happened in BC, and shows a real commitment to democractic principles. The ex-premier’s actions will tell us a lot about the entire party he once led. Is Mr André Fortin pressing him to pay for his replacement by-election?
But who are our new managers? They promised all sorts of things (as did the other parties -- so generous with our money, aren’t they all?). Do we really want another hospital in Gatineau? Better healthcare for sure, but Gatineau’s administration culture is the cause for our region’s big decline in care and services. Hopefully, the CAQ will decentralize the system.
Now, the other parties: will they take any lessons from us, the voters, or will they plow onward determined to do whatever they think is good for them? Why do we have at least three parties left of centre? Isn’t the SQ just the old PQ? And the NDP, really? Likewise for the Conservatives – these add-ons at the last minute give their core some place to mark on the ballot, but offer absolutely nothing to the voters since they don’t have a chance in the world of even forming a coalition government and they can promise heaven on earth.
There are a lot of unanswered, hanging questions from this election, and I’d like to see some evidence that the political people are even thinking about them, and not just pushing on ahead with their own schedule, despite the changing world outside. Like the Democrats in the States, no?
