Big changes for Brook Street being considered
Sophie Demers
Plans for a three-storey, eight-unit building have been submitted for the lot at 64 rue Brook in Old Aylmer. The house currently on a corner lot at the intersection of Brook and Tiberius streets was approved for demolition by the city in 2022.
The house on the lot, built in 1946, is a two-storey, two-unit building. As the lot is in old Aylmer, it is subject to Site Planning and Architectural Integration Program Regulations that aim to ensure that new construction integrates well into the surrounding environment. According to the project analysis documents, the project blends into the surrounding area, as it reinterprets the typical silhouette of matchstick houses while adding contemporary elements.
The project includes two minor variances that will need to be approved by city council. These include a request for the project to be exempt from the requirement for an underground or structured parking space as well as a request to reduce the minimum distance between the parking space and the building wall from six metres to two metres.
The parking lot is planned for the rear of the building, with vehicle access from Tiberius Street. It will be surrounded by shrubs to ensure that it remains visually appealing.
City council will discuss the plans for 64 rue Brook at their upcoming meeting on February 17. The meeting will take place in Aylmer at Centre Aydelu, 94 rue Patrimoine. Residents planning to address the council should arrive at 6:30 pm to register before the meeting begins at 7 pm. The meeting is open to the public.
