Launching into summer with the beauty of Parkdale Market

 

Located in the heart of Ottawa is the neighbourhood of Hintonburg and its prime destination for stocking up for summer, Parkdale Market. With nearly 15 vendors, about 60% are local producers growing local, fresh and nutritous food that hasn’t travelled long kilometres to arrive at market. The City of Ottawa favours and encourages purchasing local products, making a positive impact on the local economy.

For quality control, “Savour Ottawa uses a verification procedure of the local producers so as to ensure the products are actually cultivated locally. Buyers can rely on the authorized green signs as well as the Savour Ottawa logo for verified sellers,” explained Geneviève Gazaille, Communications Coordinator for City of Ottawa Markets. Also, Savour Ottawa offers a web portal – SavourOttawaOnline.ca – where the public can order local products online and later pick them up in the park building located behind the Parkdale Market.

New Activities

This year, the Parkdale Market sparked a wind of renewal. Besides the food items offered at the market, three special events have been organized; authors’ and local artisans’ fairs. Crafts, jewellery, house-hold items are some of the products that will be sold at the craft fair. Many Anglophone and francophone authors who specialize in science, science-fiction and even travel writers will be on site to share their passions. These activities are at Parkdale Park from 10 am to 4 pm every second Saturday of the month, from June to August. And, an invited chef will offer culinary displays accompanied by a tasting session at lunch time.

While the local clientele is dedicated to the market, vendors welcome and encourage visitors from other Ottawa and Gatineau neighbourhoods. People from all over can explore the region’s history with a visit. In fact, active since 1924, the market was established 92 years ago, making it one of the two oldest markets in Ottawa. “By visiting, people are a part of a living history. They meet vendors who have been a part of the market for several generations,” said Geneviève Gazaille. A market visit is a fine occasion to take off on a journey of exploring community and making a toast to summer!
