Not freedom for me?
Freedom for me, not you. That's what the shouts of "Freedom!" seem to mean when screamed by the zealots on Wellington as the police moved in. I am 79 years old and have a heart condition, after working a full, long and productive life. These people seem to want the freedom to do whatever crosses their minds -- or to break out of what feels like an un-free lifetime of work and obligation. Where is my freedom to go out to the store or for a hair cut without exposure to all these un-vaccinated crowds? Don't they think I deserve "freedom" too?
We all do have freedoms, but not entirely without restraint or without rules. A rule-less freedom is the law of jungle, eat or be eaten, but we want a free community, supporting each other as needed. Canada is a big community, a community of individuals, for sure, but still a community. I hope it still is after all this.
