RBC’s actions on climate and Indigenous rights
As part of an international day of action against the financing of fossil fuels, Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists have replaced two advertising billboards at the corner of the 40 and Boulevard St. Michel. The banners denounce RBC’s colossal investments in fossil fuels and underscore the fact that it invests heavily in projects requiring the theft of Indigenous Lands, such as the Coastal Gaslink pipeline on Wet’suwet’en territory.
XR’s action is a few days before COP26. Land Defenders, Civil Society, and grassroots climate justice groups are mobilizing around 40 events across the country. Together, they join thousands of advocates in 26 countries, including Greta Thunberg, who is expected to take part in a demonstration at Standard & Charter’s in London.
RBC hides behinds millions of dollars in advertising and public relations. But the facts don’t lie. This bank is the fifth biggest funder of fossil fuels and climate chaos in the world. It has invested $208 billion dollars in fossil fuels since 2016. This is more than the budget for climate policy in all of Canada! It is one of the biggest brakes on progress in the country, and it’s time for people to know.”
