The City of Gatineau sets a course to 2036 with a new vision and a five-year action plan

Jude Osmond

The city of Gatineau announced it has completed an important step toward adopting a strategic direction that will guide Gatineau's actions over the next 10 years.

The city aims to bring this initiative to redefine this vision for the future and to provide a structured framework to optimize the use of all resources. The goal of the framework is to focus on citizens' real needs and prepare for future challenges. The action plan will ensure they stay on schedule, allowing them to focus on other projects across the city.

Simon Rousseau, General Manager for the city of Gatineau, mentioned that the goal is for Gatineau to become a leader in Canada in citizen services and sustainable development, and have every resident feel listened to and respected.

Focus will be on five structural goals to help develop the action plan.

  • Experience as a citizen
  • Sustainability and the quality of infrastructure
  • Responsible land and property planning
  • Local and strong innovative economy
  • Inclusive and dynamic living environments

The plan took over a year to develop and was structured into three main phases: Planning and preparation, consultation and analysis, and development and strategic directions. The development of Vision 2036 was built on inclusive participation by citizens, municipal elected officials, and city employees.

The city says the process allowed it to build an accurate picture and vision, and turn residents' concerns into concrete actions. It also says the action plan is revolutionizing the way the city plans and delivers services, contributing to improved quality of life for citizens.

‘’With Vision 2036, Gatineau is establishing a clear direction for the future, rooted in the priorities expressed by its residents. This approach allows us not only to plan our development better, but also to take concrete action now through the integrated 2026-2030 action plan. This represents a strong commitment to our citizens, to build sustainable and inclusive living environments that meet their expectations,” said Steve Moran, Chair of the Executive Committee and City Councillor for the Hull–Wright district.

The next steps are the external distribution of the Gatineau Vision 2036 and the 2026-2030 strategic action plan documents.
