The future west end ecocentre takes another step forward

Gatineau is moving forward with plans to build a new ecocentre in the west end of the city. On September 23, the City announced that it had awarded a professional architectural services contract to Gestion L’Œuf Inc., valued at approximately $276,055, including taxes.
This contract will advance the detailed design of the project and the preparation of the plans and specifications necessary for its completion. The future ecocentre is part of Gatineau’s 2023-2029 Plan de gestion des matières résiduelles (PGMR), which calls for, among other things, the optimization of the municipal network to facilitate access for residents.
The proposed facility is to be located on chemin Vanier, between chemin Pink and rue de Vernon. Its primary goal is to improve access to ecocentre services for residents of the western sector and to complement the municipal network.
The Hull and Aéroparc ecocentres currently receive nearly 100,000 visits each year. The creation of a new facility in the west end should therefore help distribute visitor traffic and improve access to services.
The project underwent a mediation process in 2023, involving citizens, community representatives, and the City. Planning work carried out in 2025 and 2026 then made it possible to define operational needs and develop a design concept tailored to the site.
The future recycling centre will include facilities dedicated to reuse, areas for household hazardous waste, and infrastructure to support operations. The City also aims to obtain LEED Gold certification for the building.
The timeline for completion includes a planning phase through 2026, followed by tendering and construction phases in 2027 and 2028.
