Vote to protect the future for all (Translated)
Your vote makes a difference. In a few days the municipal elections will be held. We, Mothers on the Frontline of the Outaouais, are launching a heartfelt appeal for the population to bring to office candidates who will show courage and determination in the face of climate change and environmental degradation.
The climate crisis is here, now. It is at the very heart of Gatineau and the Outaouais. It is urgent to act! Our municipalities, on the front lines, are facing the effects of increasing heat waves and droughts, forest fires, storms, tornadoes and floods. These phenomena threaten the future of our children.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting ecosystems, halting the loss of biodiversity and protecting ourselves from natural disasters must be priorities for our municipalities. To meet these challenges, we must make the fight against and adaptation to climate change the spearhead of a great social and ecological transition.
The solutions are known! What we need are candidates who will move from words to concrete action. All their decisions must be screened for their impact on the environment and public health.
We need to expand our horizons by offering more car-sharing, car-pooling and public transit options within and between our regions. We need transportation facilities (sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian streets, etc.). We need to green our neighbourhoods to create cool oases. We are asking for more affordable, healthy, local organic food, better quality tap water and better waste management with a focus on source reduction. Preserving Gatineau Park and the forest parcels along the Ottawa River is essential to the quality of life of all children and the general population.
As citizens, we have the power to vote for these actions. Yet only 44.8% of us in Quebec voted in the last election in 2017. The issues are so important that we have a duty to make our voices heard by supporting those who will protect the health and safety of our communities.
Our vote makes a difference on November 7!
